A listing of instutions and individuals receiving honors and awards
  • An image depicting a single mother balancing home life and school work was selected to win this year’s “College Seen,” an annual photo contest co-sponsored by the Foundation for California Community Colleges that draws hundreds of entries from community college students. Pedro Trevino, a student at West Hills Community College in Coalinga, was the photographer behind the grand prize photo, winning $500 from the Foundation and an Adobe Creative Suite® 4 Design Premium package, courtesy of Adobe®. The subject in his photo, entitled “You are no barrier, you are a motive,” is his sister, a single mother who returned to school after a divorce in order to ensure a brighter future for her family. The image, showing the woman holding her child while she studies late into the night, offers an accurate reflection of the challenges many community college students face, particularly in the current economy.

  • The Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation has awarded the Austin Community College District Police Department “Recognized Status” for best practices in law enforcement. The district’s department is the first community college police force in Texas to receive this recognition. “Recognized Status” indicates that the ACC Police Department meets or exceeds all of the identified best practices for Texas law enforcement, in areas such as patrol and investigative operations and protection of citizen rights. Over the past year, the college’s Police Department undertook an internal review of all its policies, procedures and operations, and the college made necessary modifications, according to the foundation.

  • Suffolk County Community College in New York announced that it has been selected to receive the Innovative Educational Institution Achievement Award presented by the Hauppauge Industrial Association as part of the association’s Business Achievement Award competition. Judging was based on commitment to the betterment of the Long Island community, positive employer/employee relations, revenue and profitability trends and future vision. Candidates were also able to point out any recent outstanding accomplishments, technical innovations, market expansion or industry leadership in their bid for the award. Another factor influencing the college’s award-winning application is its launch of a new associate degree program in manufacturing technology. Open for enrollment this semester, the program will help to meet the demands from area employers for a better-trained workforce. This new degree will afford graduates opportunities for employment in industries that include precision metalwork, computer numeric control machining, computer-aided design, cellular manufacturing, and quality control.
