Summary of institutions and individuals receiving honors and awards
- Thomas Gannon received Camden County College’s first-ever Administrative Professional of the Year Award. Gannon, who has worked at the New Jersey since 2000, is the secretary to the dean of enrollment services. He was recognized for his efficiency and his positive demeanor, and one nomination even labeled him “the hardest-working secretary on campus.”
- Jon Olseth, an English instructor at Minnesota’s Riverland Community College, was chosen over 250 other national contestants as the 2009 Flash Fiction Contest Winner for his short story “Frostbite.” The story is published in the 2009 spring edition of the Blue Earth Review. Blue Earth Review is the literary magazine of Minnesota State University, Mankato. The magazine seeks outstanding examples of contemporary poetry, prose, photography and artwork. Blue Earth Review acquires first North American serial rights for any published work. After the original publication, rights revert to the author. Olseth has been a full time instructor at Riverland since 1999 and teaches English, creative writing and the humanities.
- Psi Beta, the national honor society for psychology students in two-year colleges, has given the North Campus chapter at the Community College of Allegheny County a 2009 Chapter Excellence Award. This award is given to all chapters meeting or exceeding Psi Beta’s chapter excellence standards. CCAC is the only college in Pennsylvania honored with the award. The mission of Psi Beta Honor Society is to promote professional development of psychology students in two-year colleges through promotion and recognition of excellence in scholarship, leadership, research and community service.
- Riverland Community College Farm Business Management Instructor Gary Thome was one of six agriculture educators nationwide to receive the Outstanding Agriculture Education Teacher Award from the National Association of Agricultural Educators. Each of the six regional winners received a plaque, cash award, and all-expenses paid trip to attend the annual conference in Tennessee. The award distinguishes association members who are at the pinnacle of their profession and conducting the highest quality agricultural education programs. The award recognizes leadership in civic, community, agriculture/agribusiness and professional activities. Outstanding agricultural educators are innovators and catalysts for student success in agricultural education. Thome has been teaching farm business management for more than 35 years, the last 21 years for Riverland Community College, which is located in Austin, Minn.
- Launched only a year ago at the annual meeting of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau in Miami Beach, the Center for Service Excellence at Miami Dade College is already making great strides, especially in helping businesses succeed in tough economic times. As a result, the center was recently awarded the 2009 Adult and Continuing Education Commission Exemplary Practice Award from the Florida Association of Community Colleges. In partnership with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and other business organizations, the center provides important service industry training to all employee levels in organizations, from entry to senior management. Courses, seminars and certificate programs include Introduction to Customer Service Excellence, Customer Assistance Technology, Conversational Spanish for the Service Industry, Recovering from Negative Encounters and Changing the Customer Service Culture.
