Summary list of institutions receiving grants and gifts

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski announced that the State Energy Program is awarding a $1 million grant to Portland Community College’s Net Zero energy efficiency plan for its Sylvania Campus. As part of the first phase of PCC’s Net Zero project — which has a goal of producing as much energy as the college requires on-site — the State Energy Program funds would go toward the cost of improving and renovating the 47-year-old College Center Building on campus. The total cost of the project is $15.4 million, with PCC contributing $9.7 million of its own money to get the work done.

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women has awarded a $300,000 grant to Bergen Community College (N.J.) for a three-year project that will include training, educational programs and physical improvements on the college’s campuses. Under the grant, the college will design, develop and implement programs to prevent and reduce violence against women and other potential at-risk members of the community while ensuring support for victims of campus violence. Some of the plans include organizing a violence prevention task force on campus; developing educational programs for students about stalking, dating violence and sexual assault; providing ongoing training for designated members of the administration and staff to deal with situations involving violence against women; and enhancing training for police officers, public safety and security officers who deal with situations resulting in violence against women.

The Police Department at Georgia’s DeKalb Technical College is getting a new set of wheels from the city of Clarkston. “New” may not be correct word, because the 2003 Mercury Sable has more than 90,000 miles on it, but it is new to the DeKalb Tech police car fleet. It is because DeKalb Tech recently launched its Law Enforcement Academy that Clarkston city officials believed a donation of a police car would be appropriate.
